Sewing and Hair bows?

My husband loves these things called wild rags. I'm not sure if anyone has heard of them but they are basically just a silk bandana. What I am trying to get at is he has been bugging me to make him some. I have not worked with silk before but my machine does have a foot specifically for silk and similar materials (sorry, dont know what it is called because I have not looked into it that much). When I pick out material is there anything specific I need to look at or take into account? Also, any tips for working with silk?

Also, I want to make some hair bows for my niece, but I don't know where to get the little silver clasps to put the ribbon on. You know, the ones that you push the two levers on the side and it releases the clip part. Help!!

Any suggestions and ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I have not heard of wild rags, but I will tell you what I know about silk and the clips and hope it helps!

When working with some kinds of silk, you need small, sharp pins. They have specific pins for working with silk. Regular pins will make holes that are too big and are not sharp enough to go through without damaging the silk. You would also need the appropriate needle in the machine too.

There are also many types of silk available. (Raw silk, dupioni silk for instance...) Most silk has to be dry cleaned, however I do remember my mom hand-washing a few things she made. There are silk blends that are machine washable. You would also want to launder the fabric before you begin because it will shrink. When you purchase your fabric, ask about how to launder it so that you know.

Here is just one link for sewing with silk: http://www.denverfabrics.com/pages/stati...

The hairclips can be found at the craft store. They are easy to find.

Good luck. Happy Sewing. :)

Don't know much about the first part. But the clips can be found at WalMart, Target, Most Drug Stores(Savon, RiteAid, etc.) and Beauty Supply Shops.

I used to make barrettes that matched my daughter dresses. I always used fabric and grosgrain ribbons. Used hot glue gun with the few satins that I did. I got the barrette blanks at Wal mart. They were not very expensive.
