I have tried many things, and sites, but I'm not able to make the bow I want. the regular looking bow that you glue to a clippie that's about an inch wide and, all finished, about 2 and a half inches long.

Perhaps... You need to look into tying "Ribbon". See link for how-to on several ribbon-bows.
Try utube has lots of instructions.
